Set Up Rhode Island Returns

This article applies to:Returns Central

Tell Us Where You Collect Tax

Add Rhode Island to the places where you collect tax. This tells AvaTax to calculate tax on Rhode Island transactions. See the Rhode Island Division of Taxation website for details about nexus, registration, and taxes in Rhode Island.

Before you add Rhode Island, there are two things you need to do:

You don't have to select a tax type for Rhode Island.

"Sourcing" determines the location where a sale is taxed. Rhode Island is a destination-sourced state.

Add Your Company Locations

Rhode Island doesn't require location reporting on the returns. Add any physical locations you have in Rhode Island to enhance your company setup and track sales by location.

Schedule Your Returns

After you tell us where you collect tax and add locations, you're ready to schedule returns. Go to Returns in AvaTax to provide a funding power of attorney and schedule your returns

Your company name and taxpayer ID from Your Company Details show up on your returns. Make sure they match what’s on your registration information.

Use this info to schedule your returns. Keep in mind that the selections you made when you told us where you collect tax, any location codes you entered, and the forms you select are related and should tie together.

  • Rhode Island requires an annual return and may require monthly or quarterly payments. The state determines the required frequency based on your recent tax liability and may notify you of frequency changes by mail.
    • Select the RI T-204R Annual to file annually
    • Select the RI T-204M form in addition to the annual form, if you're required to file monthly
    • Select the RI T-204Q form in addition to the annual form, if you're required to file quarterly
    • Make sure you enter the eleven-digit registration ID associated with your account in the correct format. It's your nine-digit Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) with "00" at the end. Example: 12345678900, if your FEIN is 123456789
    • See the Rhode Island Division of Taxation website or contact the Rhode Island Division of Taxation at 401-574-8955 for more info about prepayments
  • If you're registered to remit consumer use tax only, select the RI T205 form
