Update a filing request for a return

As the client's company changes over time due to changes in where they collect and pay taxes, you may need to update the return by changing an existing filing request.

When replacing a current form with new forms, expire the existing request and submit a new filing request. For more information, see Submit a filing request.



For new companies, filing requests must be submitted by the 20th of the month prior to the return filing (for example, March 20th for the April return). For existing companies, filing requests must be submitted by the 25th of the month prior to the return filing.



  1. From Managed Returns for Accountants, on the Filing calendars page, use the filters to locate the filing request you want to update.
  2. From the results table, find the request.
    In the left column of the table, select the arrow to view the filing request details. Only the login credentials are editable.
  3. Select , and then select Edit.
  4. For the filing request, make changes to any of the following fields that need to be updated:
    • Frequency: Filing period assigned by the state.
      If you need to adjust the filing frequency, make sure to also enter an updated Effective Date for the first return to be filed with the new frequency.
    • Effective Date: Current period start date is automatically entered here or you can enter a future start date.
    • End Date: Expiration date to stop filing the return.
      For example, if the December 2020 return should be the last return filed, enter the end date as December 2021. Alternatively, select the calendar icon and then select the year and month of the last return.
    • EIN: The number the client uses to do business within the U.S. Call the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line if there are questions about the client company's Taxpayer ID Number.
    • Filing Method:
      • Electronic: Automated filing; requires login credentials.
      • Paper: Paper return mailed to the state.
    • Legal entity information
    • Filing calendar question: Varies from state to state.
    • Registration ID: Account number provided by the state.
    • Location Code: Add or remove to pull transactions associated with the location code to the return.
  5. Select Save to submit the update.



When you edit a filing request and select Save, a new filing request is submitted that needs to be approved by Avalara.
