How do I resolve "Automation Error" or "Class Not Registered" error in QuickBooks Desktop?

Overview

When you open the QuickBooks Desktop, you receive "Automation Error" or "Class Not Registered" error that restricts you from using AvaTax.

Environment

AvaTax for QuickBooks Desktop v95.02

Resolution

Perform the following one-time activity.

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Avalara\AvaTax Adapter\Bin.
  3. Inside the Bin folder, locate the following .bat files.
    • register_for_callback.bat
    • register_for_Adapter.bat
  4. Right-click the register_for_callback.bat file and select Run as administrator.
  5. Right-click the register_for_Adapter.bat file and select Run as administrator.
  6. Open QuickBooks Desktop.

Once you complete this activity, QuickBooks Desktop will surpass the error and run smoothly ever after. You may need to repeat this activity only when you upgrade your operating system (Windows).
