Why am I receiving the following error when trying to send a GetTax call to the service: "Response: Status=Internal Server Error, StatusCode=500"?


When using an AvaTax integration or the AvaTax API, you receive the error: 

Status=Internal Server Error, StatusCode=500.

  • The header level 500 code for error messages is vague and will not aid in trouble shooting.
    • Please look for the response body's Summary message for the specific reason of the error.
  • If you cannot find more information, please check the settings below:
    • Verify the account number, company code, and license key are valid
    • Please make sure your URL reads or, it must say "https"
    • Once this is confirmed, please check your user role in the accounting system
      • You will need to be an Admin or the SA
    • Next check the username and password being used in the AvaTax credentials.
      • This username will need to be present in the Admin Console and as an Active, Account Admin role.
  • If all of these settings are confirmed, please reach out to your IT department to make sure you are able to do a successful ping to or
    • If the ping is successful, please reach out to Avalara Technical Support.
