How to Automate downloading your ISPI rates (FTP)

Overview

I would like to automate downloading of my rate files.

Environment

Avalara Rate Files

Resolution

  • This can only be done if you download via a FTP
  • Please contact you Customer Account Manager to switch, if needed.
  • If you would like to automate the process of downloading your rates each month you can do so with the following script.

    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ftp.exe -s:%0
    open FTP.Taxrates.com
    USERNAME
    PASSWORD
    cd FTP_FOLDER_NAME
    lcd PATH_TO_SAVE_TO
    get FILE_TO_DOWNLOAD
    bye

You will want to add more "get" commands followed by the FILE_TO_DOWNLOAD if you would like to download multiple files at once. You can set this to download any file that is in your download folder by adding another GET command to it.

The text in red is the information you will need to change to your required information.

Lets say this is my information:

    Username: AvaTest
    Password: password
    FTP Folder Name: ftp025_avatest
    Path to Save: C:\Rate Files
    File To Download: TAX.ZIP

My script would look like this:

    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ftp.exe -s:%0
    open FTP.Taxrates.com
    AvaTest
    password
    cd ftp025_AvaTest
    lcd "C:\Rate Files"
    get TAX.ZIP
    bye

If you get an error saying it cannot find the FTP program, you may need to change the first line to the location of your FTP.exe program. On a 32-bit system it is generally in the c:\Windows\System32 folder.

You can also use the attached program to create your ftp-docs.bat file to automate this. This program is provided as is with no warranty.

Once your ftp-docs.bat file is created you can use it each month to get your new rates each month or set this to run as a Windows task. To set as a task you will want to run the CMD program and set your "Add Arguments (Optional)" to /c PATH_TO_BAT_FILE.
