Send Universal Product Code (UPC) from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce to AvaTax for tax calculation

You also have the option to send a Universal Product Code (UPC) from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce to AvaTax for managing product taxability. To use this option, UPCs need to be assigned to the items you sell, and those UPCs need to be mapped to Avalara tax codes. If a UPC isn't assigned to an item, the model number is sent to AvaTax as the default item code. Talk to your Account Manager if you want to use the UPC service. This feature is currently available when the POS is online.

Sending UPC code to AvaTax for tax calculation requires the following steps to be performed in sequence:

  1. Map items to UPCs
  2. Enable the UPC option
  3. Send UPC data to POS/MPOS

Before you begin

Before you map an item to a UPC, enable the UPC to be used as an item code.

Map your items to UPCs in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce(HQ)

UPCs need to be assigned to the items you sell, and those UPCs need to be mapped to Avalara tax codes.

Steps

  1. Log in to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce(HQ).
  2. In the left pane, select Product information management.
  3. Expand Products > Released Product.
  4. From the released product list, select the product for which UPC is to be assigned.
  5. Select the Manage Inventory > Warehouse > GTIN codes.
  6. On the GTIN page, enter the UPC you want to use for a product or a service in the GTIN field.
  7. Select Save

Enable the UPC option in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce(HQ)

You must enable this option so that the UPCs can be passed to AvaTax as item codes.

Steps

  1. Log in to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce(HQ).
  2. In the left pane, under Modules, select Avalara AvaTax.
  3. Expand Setup and then select Setup the AvaTax connector.
  4. On the Set up the AvaTax connector page, select Sales Tax Settings.
  5. On the Sales Tax Settings page, expand Product/Item Level Settings and then turn on the Use UPC as Item Code option.
    If you do not enable this option, then the item code is used for tax calculation.

Send UPC data and configuration data from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce(HQ) to POS/MPOS

Run the following jobs to send the configuration data to MPOS/POS:

  1. AVA-0001 

  2. 1040

Steps

  1. Log in to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce(HQ).
  2. In the left pane, under Modules, select Retail and Commerce > Retail and Commerce IT.
  3. Select Distribution schedule.
  4. Select the jobs (AVA-0001 and 1040) under Catalog and then select Run Now.
