Importing Google product catalogs guidelines

This article applies to:AvaTax

Export products from your ecommerce platform and convert that information into a Google product file to ensure that imported and exported products are taxed properly when shipped between countries.

Before you begin

  • Filename must start with "HSCR.V2." (no quotation marks)
  • File extension must be .txt
  • SFTP directory must be Inbound
  • Format must be Tab Separated Value
  • Column headings must be lowercase. Use underscores instead of spaces
  • Column order doesn't matter
  • Some field requirements are determined by Google
  • Values cannot include the the following characters:
    • "
    • ,
    • /n
    • / (in the ID or Description field)

About required fields

  • Required
    This field must have a value.
  • Conditional
    This field only requires a value under specific conditions. See the Description column for guidelines.
  • Recommended
    This field isn't required, but we recommend adding a value for more accurate classifications. See the Description column for examples.

to_classify Required

The country where your product should be classified.

If this field is blank, AvaTax checks your country settings under Settings > Where You Collect and then assigns a tariff code to the product for each country. Enter a value in this field to override this behavior.

Enter countries by their two-letter ISO code. Separate multiple countries with a /.

  • Example: US/CA/FR/JP
  • Example: US/
company_id Required

This is your AvaTax company ID. Its a unique column required for Avalara customers.

  • Example: 381475

Finding your company ID

  • Sign in to AvaTax and go to Settings > What You Sell
  • If you have more than one company, click Switch Company and select the appropriate one
  • The company ID value is in the address bar, just behind the c/, as seen in the screenshot below





A unique value for each product that you sell. Typically the product SKU, but ecommerce platforms may require a different value.

  • Example: CLO-29473856-1

Note: Do not include a / in ID values.




A short and accurate description of your product, including any distinguishing variations in material, color, or size.

  • Example: Roma Cotton Rich Bootcut Jeans



An accurate description of your product.

  • Example: A pair of boot-cut jeans in stretch cotton

Note: Do not include a / in Description values.




The full category used to organize your product in your inventory.

  • Example: Women's Clothing > Jeans > Bootcut Jeans



A link to your product on a publicly accessible, verified domain. URLs should comply with RFC 2396 or RFC 1738. For example, a comma is represented as "%2C".

URL is a very important field for visually identifying the product and providing a more accurate classification.

Note: Links must be publicly accessible. If your product is not live, try to upload images to a cloud-based drive or storage location (such as Google Drive or Dropbox) and generating a link that is accessible to an external user.

image_link Required

A link to an image of your product on a verified domain.

price Recommended

The price of your product in the appropriate currency.

Enter a numerical price and designate the currency by its ISO 4217 currency code.

condition Recommended

The condition of your product at the time of sale.

  • New
  • Refurbished
  • Used
coo Recommended

The country of origin. Enter countries by their two-letter ISO code.

  • Example: ID
hs_hint Recommended If you already know the tariff code or HS6 designation, add it to this column.
hs_code_test Recommended

This value is used in preproduction testing to verify that Avalara's tariff code assignment functionality is working properly in your sandbox environment.

Items aren't classified for sandbox accounts.

google_product_category Recommended

The product category as defined by Google's product taxonomy.

  • Example: Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Pants > Jeans
availability Recommended

Your product's availability.

  • In stock
  • Out of stock
  • Preorder
sale_price Recommended The price of your product when on sale.



Only necessary if Sales Price contains a value.

Separate start and end dates with a /

  • YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss
  • YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ssZ



The product's global trade item number.

Added spaces and dashes are ignored

  • UPC (in North America / GTIN-12) 
    12-digit number like 323456789012
    8-digit UPC-E codes should be converted to 12-digit codes
  • EAN (in Europe / GTIN-13)
    13-digit number like 3001234567892
  • JAN (in Japan / GTIN-13)
    8 or 13-digit number like 49123456 or 4901234567894
  • ISBN (for books)
    10 or 13-digit number like 1455582344 or 978-1455582341. If you have both, only include the 13-digit number. Convert ISBN-10 to ISBN-13
  • ITF-14 (for multipacks / GTIN-14)
    14-digit number like 41857435001202



The brand name of the product.



The product's manufacturer part number as assigned by its manufacturer.

  • Example: B003J5F5EY



The primary product material.

For materials that have primary and secondary materials, separate up to three materials with a /.

  • Example: Cotton
shipping Recommended

The shipping method associated with the product or purchase.

Shipping values should include the country, shipping service, and shipping price.

  • Example: US:CA:Express:3.80 USD
  • Example: CA:US:Overnight:16.00 USD



The color of your product. Separate multiple colors with a /, listing the primary color first.

  • Example: Red
  • Example: Navy/Yellow/Green



A unique value for an item group containing multiple variants. Use item group IDs for sets of products that differ by color, size, pattern, material, age group, or gender.

This isn't required if the item isn't part of a group of variants.

  • Example: CLO-29473856
gender Conditional

A gender designation that normally applies to gender-specific clothing.

This isn't required for items without a gender designation, such as furniture.

  • Female
  • Male
  • Unisex
age_group Conditional

An age designation that normally applies to age-specific clothing.

This isn't required for items without an age group designation, such as furniture.

  • Newborn (up to 3 months)
  • Infant (3-12 months)
  • Toddler (1-5 years)
  • Kids (5-13 years)
  • Adult (14+)
size Conditional

The size of your clothing products. If it has multiple dimensions (Ex: neck and sleeve measurements), combine them into a single value.

This isn't required for items without a size designation, such as furniture.

  • Example: 8 Standard
  • Example: L
  • Example: One size fits all
shipping_weight Conditional

The weight of the product. This information is required in some jurisdictions.

Weight values can be 0-2000 lbs or 0-1000 kgs.
