How are VAT returns organised in Avalara VAT Returns?

This page provides a quick breakdown of the logic used to organise and display returns in the Avalara VAT Returns system.

Organising your returns

Effective from September 2020, Avalara has made some adjustments to how your VAT returns are organised and displayed in Avalara VAT Returns.

Avalara made these changes to make the returns display in VAT Returns more representative of how most businesses typically think about their VAT returns.

Your VAT returns will be displayed in the month after the period ends, rather than in the month in which they are due, for example, if you have a quarterly return for the period July-September that is due on 4th November, it will show in the October section in VAT Reporting. Previously this would have been shown in November.

This does not change when VAT returns are due to be filed or paid, only how we display them in the system. This also means that VAT returns are shown to you earlier, giving you additional time to make sure everything is accurate and can be filed on time.

Viewing retrospective or corrective returns

To jump back into previous months and view your retrospective returns, simply change the month you are viewing from the month selector drop down menu, this enables you to view all your past returns. These past returns are also grouped by the month in which they were processed.

You can identify corrective returns by the code CR under the return type heading.
