Install and Configure Sage Sales Tax for Sage 500 ERP Powered by Avalara AvaTax

Now that you've activated your AvaTax account and set up your tax profile, it's time to install and configure your integration. At the end of this process, you'll send a test transaction to confirm that AvaTax is calculating tax the way you expect. After running a successful test, you'll be able to start using AvaTax!

1. Install

There are two elements that you must install to use Sage Sales Tax for Sage 500 ERP 2014 Powered by AvaTax—a server element and a workstation element. We recommend that your solution provider merge these elements with any add-ons or enhancements to Sage 500 ERP to make sure they work properly. Before you install, make sure that all Sage 500 ERP users are logged out of Sage 500 and that Sage 500 is closed. You must install on your Sage 500 server and on the workstation of every Sage 500 ERP user who needs to use Sage Sales Tax for Sage 500 Powered by AvaTax.

Install on your server

  1. Extract the contents of the zip file that you downloaded from the AvaTax Admin Console.
  2. Copy Sage Sales Tax Server for Sage 500 ERP 2014 7.60 Version 7.60.01.00.msi to your Sage 500 server.
  3. On the server, double-click Sage Sales Tax Server for Sage 500 ERP 2014 7.60 Version 7.60.01.00.msi.

  4. In the Database Server dialog box, under Database Server, select your Sage 500 server.
  5. Under Connect using, click Server authentication using the Login ID and password below.
  6. If you're using Sage 500 ERP 7.70, type your Login ID and Password, select the Name of Database Catalog, and then click Next to start the installation. If you are using Sage 500 ERP 7.60 or below, type your Login ID and Password, and then click Next. In the Database Server dialog box, under Database Name, select your database name, and then click Install.
  7. In the InstallShield Wizard Completed dialog box, click Finish.

Install on your workstations

  1. From the contents of the zip file that you downloaded from the AvaTax Admin Console, copy Sage Sales Tax Client for Sage 500 ERP 2014 7.60 Version 7.60.01.00.msi to each workstation.
  2. On each workstation, double-click Sage Sales Tax Client for Sage 500 ERP 2014 7.60 Version 7.60.01.00.msi.

  3. In the Destination Folder dialog box, click Next.

  4. When the installation is finished, click Finish.

2. Configure

Now that you've activated your AvaTax account, set up your tax profile, and installed the integration, it's time to configure. You need to configure with the setup assistant and maintenance tools.

Configure with the Setup Assistant

In order to complete the configuration of AvaTax for Sage 500, you need to enter your account credentials and company code, map your tax schedule to AvaTax, setup address validation, and finally, test to ensure that tax is calculating. Follow these steps to complete the configuration:

  1. In the Avalara Setup Assistant dialog box, next to Enter your Account Credentials and Company Code, click the > button.

  2. On the Avalara Account Credentials page, click Edit Settings to enter the following information:

    1. Account Number, which you got from Avalara when you set up your AvaTax account.
    2. License Key, which you got from Avalara when you set up your AvaTax account.
    3. Next to Web Service, depending on what kind of account you have, select Production or Development.
    4. Next to Web Service, click Test Connection and then follow one of these steps:
      • If you see a message that says, "Configuration validated successfully" click OK and go to the next step.
      • If you see a message that says, "Connection test failed" reenter your account information, and then again click Test Connection. Do this until you see a message that says "Configuration validated successfully". then click OK, and go to the next step.
    5. In the Company Code/Company Name field, select your company code that you created when you activated your AvaTax account. To create a new company, click Create Company.
    6. Click OK.

  3. In the Avalara Setup Assistant dialog box, next to Map Tax Schedule to AvaTax, click the > button. On the Map Tax Schedule page: 
    1. Next to Tax Schedule ID, select AVATAX.
    2. Click Set Tax Schedule ID Utility to schedule tax calculation.
    3. Click OK.

  4. In the Avalara Setup Assistant dialog box, next to Enable Address Validation for USA and Canada, click the > button.
    1. In the Enable Address Validation dialog box, click the checkbox next to Enable Address Validation.
    2. Under Map, click the checkboxes next to the countries in which you want to enable address validation, (if you wish to enable address validation in the United States, click US and click USA) and then click OK.

  5. In the Avalara Setup Assistant dialog box, next to Test Calculating Tax, click the > button.
    • If you see a message that says "Great! You are connected to AvaTax," go to the next step.
    • If you see any other message, follow steps 1-3 again.
  6. To set up your tax profile using the AvaTax tax profile assistant, in the Avalara Setup Assistant dialog box, click Click here to launch the AvaTax Tax Profile Assistant.
