Create a drop-shipping customer in CertCapture

When validating a customer's exemption document, use attributes to differentiate them as a drop ship customer. This does not change how the customer's documents are applied to transactions. Exemption certificates apply only to the states you select as Exposure Zones when validating the certificates, so make sure to select all states to which you expect the certificates to apply.

If you aren't sure which regions are exempted by an exemption certificate for a drop ship customer, Avalara recommends first consulting a tax professional, like a CPA or tax attorney.

Before you begin 

Add the customer to CertCapture.


  1. In CertCapture, search for the drop ship customer.
    The Search Results page opens.
  2. Select the customer number.
    The Customer Details page opens.
  3. Select Edit.
    The Edit Customer dialog box opens.
  4. In the Customer Attributes field, select DROP SHIP.



    Assigning the DROP SHIP attribute to a customer is intended only as a data point you can use to search for customers or documents. This does not change how the customer's documents are applied to transactions.

  5. Select Update Customer to save the changes.

You can now use the DROP SHIP attribute as a data point when searching for customers or documents.
