Shut off a tax rule

The options when shutting off a tax rule are to shut off all taxes, shut off all taxes only for specified Transaction/Service (T/S) types, or shut off selected taxes for specified T/S types. Tax rule shutoffs are permanent and effective for all time, except if you specify an effective date when shutting off a selected tax for specific T/S types.

Avalara recommends testing all customizations in your sandbox account before you add them to your production account. After you add customizations to your production account, run test transactions or use the tax determination calculator to make sure you receive the expected results before you complete any bill runs.
  1. In the Communications Customer Portal, select Settings.
  2. On the Settings page, next to Customizations, select Manage.
  3. On the Manage customizations page, select Overrides.
  4. For the override group you want to update, select the Actions icon, and select Edit.
    You can also shut off a tax rule when you add an override group.
  5. On the Override group details page, select Add overrides.
  6. Specify a tax authority. 
  7. Select the Tax rules tab.
  8. To shut off all taxes:
    1. Under Tax rules, select Shut off all taxes.
    2. For Action, select Permanently shut off all taxes for this tax authority.
    3. Under Set scope, select the tax authority for which the tax rule shutoff applies.

      Important

      This action shuts off all taxes for all tax types, all tax levels, and all Transaction/Service types for the tax authority. 

  9. To shut off a specific tax rule:
    1. Under Tax rules, for a specific T/S type, select the Actions icon and select Shut off.
    2. For Action, select Shut off the selected tax for the selected Transaction/Service types.

      Important

      This action permanently shuts off the selected T/S types only for the selected tax type and only for the specified tax level for the tax authority. 

    3. To specify an effective date for the shutoff, clear Effective for all time, and then pick a date for the shutoff to begin.
      The shutoff applies only from the specified date forward.
    4. Under Set scope, select the tax authorities for which the tax rule shutoff applies.
  10. To shut off all taxes for specific T/S types:
    1. Under Tax rules, select the T/S types, and then select Shut off selected.
    2. For Action, select Shut off the selected tax for the selected Transaction/Service types.
    3. Under Set scope, select the tax authorities for which the tax rule shutoff applies.

      Important

      This action shuts off all taxes for all tax types that include the selected T/S types, at all tax levels for the tax authority. 

  11. Select Save tax rule shut off.
    On the Add overrides page, the tax rule shutoff is displayed in the Overrides drop-down and all actions are locked.
  12. Select View all added overrides.
  13. Select Confirm and save.
  14. You can assign the override group to a profile, and then select Save override
