Add a tax type

When you add a tax type to an override group, you create a tax rate override for the added tax type.

Avalara recommends testing all customizations in your sandbox account before you add them to your production account. After you add customizations to your production account, run test transactions or use the tax determination calculator to make sure you receive the expected results before you complete any bill runs.
  1. In the Communications Customer Portal, select Settings.
  2. On the Settings page, next to Customizations, select Manage.
  3. On the Manage customizations page, select Overrides.
  4. For the override group to which you want to add a tax type, select the Actions icon, and select Edit.
  5. On the Override group details page, select Add overrides.
  6. Specify a tax authority. 
  7. Add a tax type:
    1. On the Edit override group page, under Add overrides, select Add tax type.
    2. On the Add tax type page, select Add tax type override.
    3. Under Tax type settings, specify View tax level, select a tax type, and specify an effective date.
    4. Specify the new tax rate, and indicate if there is an upper limit to which to apply the new rate.
    5. Under Set scope, specify the tax authorities for which the override applies.
      If you choose an option that includes only select tax authorities in a region, an additional selection list displays. You can select multiple tax authorities from the list.
    6. Select Next.
    7. Under Apply to additional Transaction/Service types, select at least one T/S type, and then select +Add.

      For override customizations, use one of the Transaction/Service types created for such transactions (66/710, 66/711, 66/712, 66/713, 66/714). See the Transaction and Service Types page for more detailed information.

    8. Under Tax rule overrides, specify tax applicability settings and tax calculation modifiers.
      You must select at least one option for every field.
    9. Specify whether to include tax on tax settings.
    10. Select Add tax type.
      At the top of the Tax rates table is an Overrides drop-down, where you can view all tax rate overrides. The tax rate override for the added tax type is listed in the drop-down.
  8. Select View all added overrides.
    The override for the added tax type is in the Rate overrides table.
  9. Select Confirm and save.
  10. You can assign the override group to a profile, and then select Save override group.
