Import transactions into Returns for Small Business

If you don't use AvaTax and don't have an integration that can bring transactions into Returns for Small Business for you, import transactions in bulk using a spreadsheet.

If you use Returns for Small Business alongside AvaTax, import transactions into AvaTax instead.

Keep in mind that importing transactions only works one way; it doesn't update the data in your business application.

Spreadsheets of transaction data (.csv format) from most online marketplaces and business applications are already recognized for easy upload into Returns for Small Business.


  1. In Avalara, go to Transactions > Import transactions. 
  2. Drag and drop your .csv file (it must be under 100 MB) of transaction data to the area in the center of the page. You can also select Choose file to browse to your file location on your computer instead. 
  3. Your file is then imported and validated. How long this takes depends on the size of the import template file, and if it is a new format that needs to be mapped. You can track the status of your import on the Transactions > Transaction import history page.
  4. Once validated, your transaction data is now in Avalara. A record of the imported file appears at Transactions > Transaction import history.

If you are providing your own transaction spreadsheet, we highly suggest that the following fields of data are in your file before uploading. This ensures a clean import of information.

  • order_id: The unique ID for the invoice included in the transaction.
  • date: The transaction document's date, in the format yyyy-mm-dd or mm/dd/yyyy.
  • sales: Total sale amount for the transaction.
  • tax: Total tax paid on the transaction.
  • description: A brief description of the item or service being sold.
  • shipping: Total cost of shipping for the transaction (this is zero if the sale was face-to-face).
  • shipping_tax: How much tax was paid on shipping fees.
  • origin_line1, origin_line2, origin_city, origin_state, origin_zip: The address where the transaction was shipped or sold from.
  • shipping_line1, shipping_line2_ shipping_city, shipping_state, shipping_zip: The address where the transaction was shipped to. This may be the same as the origin address, if the transaction was done at a store or similar physical location.
