Set Up South Carolina Returns

This article applies to:Returns Central

Tell Us Where You Collect Tax

Add South Carolina to the places where you collect tax. This tells AvaTax to calculate tax on South Carolina transactions. See the South Carolina Department of Revenue website for details about nexus, registration, and taxes in South Carolina.

Before you add South Carolina, there are two things you need to do:

You don't have to select a tax type for South Carolina.

"Sourcing" determines the location where a sale is taxed. South Carolina is a destination-sourced state.

Add Your Company Locations

Add any physical locations you have in South Carolina. This is important for reporting on the returns.

When you add a location:

  • Enter the state-assigned, nine-digit Retail License Number under Additional Information.
  • Enter the state-assigned, seven-digit SID Number under Additional Information.
  • After you validate the location address, make sure it falls in the jurisdictions you expect. If not, you may want to manage your jurisdiction overrides

Each physical location in South Carolina must be registered and reported separately from out-of-state sales.

  • Register online for an SID for your company, and then register an account for each location to your SID.
  • If you have sales from out-of-state, register an out-of-state account to your SID.

Enter the state-assigned retail license number exactly as it appears on your registration. Example: 12345678-9

Enter the state-assigned SID number exactly as it appears on your registration. Example: 1234567

Schedule Your Returns

After you tell us where you collect tax and add locations, you're ready to schedule returns. Go to Returns in AvaTax to provide a funding power of attorney and schedule your returns

Your company name and taxpayer ID from Your Company Details show up on your returns. Make sure they match what’s on your registration information.

Use this info to schedule your returns. Keep in mind that the selections you made when you told us where you collect tax, any location codes you entered, and the forms you select are related and should tie together.

  • Select form SC ST-3 to report all tax types.
    • Make sure you enter your state-assigned retail license number correctly. Example: 12345678-9
    • Make sure you enter your SID number correctly. Example: 1234567
    • Enter your username and password for the South Carolina MyDORWAY website when you schedule the return.
    • When you add the SC ST-3 return, Avalara also files the ST-389 - Schedule for local taxes form.
  • If you're required to file for more than one location, add a separate SC ST-3 return for each location.
    • Enter the location's unique state-assigned retail license number when you schedule the return.
    • Select the location that's associated with the return. If you don't see the location you want, use the link on the form to add it.
  • Enter your Letter ID when you schedule your returns. South Carolina Letter IDs are included on every piece of correspondence sent from the South Carolina Department of Revenue. Find letters under the Correspondence tab on the South Carolina MyDORWAY website.
  • South Carolina allows discounts of up to $3,100 per fiscal year (June to May). If a scheduled return's effective date is mid-fiscal year, you must provide Avalara with the amount of discounts that have already been applied by submitting a support case.
