Manage Michigan Notices

This article applies to:Returns Central

Get the info you need to manage notices for Michigan, including submitting a power of attorney and understanding common issues.

Power of Attorney

Michigan requires a Power of Attorney (POA) for Avalara to resolve notices for you.

To submit a POA:

  1. Obtain and complete the Michigan Authorized Representative Declaration form
  2. Fax the completed POA form to the Michigan Department of Treasury at 517-636-4488, unless you can email it to a specific person
  3. Send the completed POA form and notice to us by submitting a case. Processing takes about 6 - 8 weeks.

After we have a POA on file, you don't have to submit another one unless something has changed.

Common Issues

These are the most common notice issues to resolve for Michigan. See Manage Tax Notices for additional details about resolving notice issues.

Issue Action

The 5081 reconciliation form must be filed, in addition to the 5080SU Monthly or Quarterly return. Make sure both returns are scheduled for Michigan.

Mandatory electronic filing Michigan requires returns to be filed electronically and may throw out paper returns. Set up an online account with the state, then make sure your returns are scheduled to be filed electronically.
Notice of delinquent return

Mail proof that the return was filed and paid on time to the address on the notice.
