Set Up Maine Returns

This article applies to:Returns Central

Tell Us Where You Collect Tax

Add Maine to the places where you collect tax. This tells AvaTax to calculate tax on Maine transactions. See the Maine Revenue Services website for details about nexus, registration, and taxes in Maine.

Before you add Maine, there are two things you need to do:

You don't have to select a tax type for Maine.

"Sourcing" determines the location where a sale is taxed. Maine is a destination-sourced state.

Add Your Company Locations

Add any physical locations you have in Maine. This is important for reporting on your return.

When you add a location:

  • Enter the seven-digit, state-assigned Registration Number under Additional Information
  • After you validate the location address, make sure it falls in the jurisdictions you expect. If not, you may want to manage your jurisdiction overrides

You need to register each of your Maine business locations. Each location is assigned its own seven-digit permit number. Example: 1234567

If your business has more than one location, you may be able to file the locations together under a consolidated return. If you're filing a consolidated return, register your locations under a consolidated account registration number. Example: R012345

If have sales from outside of Maine to locations in Maine, you may need to register a location for out-of-state sales.

Include your company location codes on your transactions so the taxes can be reported by location.

Schedule Your Returns

After you tell us where you collect tax and add locations, you're ready to schedule returns. Go to Returns in AvaTax to provide a funding power of attorney and schedule your returns

Your company name and taxpayer ID from Your Company Details show up on your returns. Make sure they match what’s on your registration information.

Use this info to schedule your returns. Keep in mind that the selections you made when you told us where you collect tax, any location codes you entered, and the forms you select are related and should tie together.

  • Select form ME ST-7 if you are reporting for only one in-state location or only out-of-state sales
  • Select form ME ST-7B if you have more than one in-state location and are filing a consolidated return
  • Select form ME ST-7 for each location if you have more than one in-state location and aren't filing a consolidated return
  • Select form ME ST-7U to report consumer's use tax

Enter your registration ID exactly as it appears on your registration information.

Enter your three-digit Business Code which is provided by the State of Maine. It's printed at the top of your returns provided by the state.

Maine returns must be filed electronically. Enter your registration number and password for the Maine Revenue Services Sales, Use and Service Provider Tax Filing System when you schedule the returns.
