Set Up British Columbia Returns

This article applies to:Returns Central

Tell Us Where You Collect Tax

Add British Columbia to the places where you collect tax. This tells AvaTax to calculate tax on British Columbia transactions. See the British Columbia PST website for details about nexus, registration, and taxes in British Columbia.

In general, you must collect provincial sales tax (PST):

  • If you sell or lease taxable goods or services in the ordinary course of business in British Columbia
  • If you're located outside the province but make sales in British Columbia

You may not need to collect PST if you sell only non-taxable or exempt goods or services or you're a wholesaler. Contact the British Columbia Provincial Sales Tax office if you have questions about whether or not you need to collect PST.

Online registration may allow you to get a PST number as soon as the next business day. Registration can also be completed in person or by fax. See the British Columbia PST website for more information.

You don't have to select a tax type for British Columbia.

Add Your Company Locations

Add any physical locations you have in British Columbia.

  • British Columbia allows you to report all locations on a single PST return or on separate returns if you register a separate PST number for each physical location. If you register a separate PST number for each location, make sure you add the locations in order to report sales for each location separately.
  • If you sell liquor or accommodation, you must report each location to the province. However, you may not have to register each location with its own PST number if every location is explicitly registered under the same PST number. Contact the province for help determining how you should register.

When you add a location, make sure the validated address falls in the jurisdictions you expect.

Schedule Your Returns

After you tell us where you collect tax and add locations, you're ready to schedule returns. Go to Returns in AvaTax to provide a funding power of attorney and schedule your returns

Your company name and taxpayer ID from Your Company Details show up on your returns. Make sure they match what’s on your registration information.

Use this info to schedule your returns. Keep in mind that the selections you made when you told us where you collect tax, any location codes you entered, and the forms you select are related and should tie together.

  • Select the CA GST/HST form to report and remit Canada GST
  • PST is reported on a single British Columbia PST form. Confirm your filing frequency on the registration information provided by the province.
    • Select the CA British Columbia form if you don't have locations in British Columbia or are registered to report all locations on a single form
    • Select a CA British Columbia form for each location if you're registered to report locations separately. Each scheduled form requires a separate PST number and must be identified with a location code from your company locations.
  • Provide a username and password for British Columbia's eTaxBC website if you want the return to be filed electronically
  • Canadian returns must be funded and remitted in Canadian dollars (CAD).
    • If you don't agree to fund and report in CAD, Avalara offers Signature Ready returns where we prep the returns and you're responsible for filing and paying. You can also file in house if you don't want to do either of these options.
