Ask Avalara to file a skipped return if you were granted a COVID-19 filing extension

This article applies to:Avalara Returns

If you have not asked Avalara to stop filing returns in any tax jurisdictions, stop. View read our COVID-19 response FAQ to see what options are available if Avalara files and pays your returns on your behalf and you have not yet taken advantage of relief offered by a tax jurisdiction.

If you asked Avalara to stop filing a return in March or April of 2020, follow these instructions to file returns for tax jurisdictions you asked Avalara to stop filing in.

Before you begin

  • If all transactions for the tax jurisdiction and time period are not in AvaTax, import the missing transactions.
  • If you haven't already, schedule new returns for the tax jurisdictions you asked us to stop filing in.
Schedule new returns no later than the last day of the month before the month you want Avalara to begin filing again. For example:
    • If you file monthly and want Avalara to begin filing again for your April return, submit a request no later than April 30 so Avalara can file your April return in May.
    • If your business files quarterly and you want Avalara to begin filing again for your Q2 return, submit a request no later than June 30, the last day of Q2.
  • Once you have scheduled returns for the jurisdictions you stopped filing in, follow these instructions.
