Filing timelines for SST customers

This article applies to:AvaTax

Each state sets its own due date for filing returns and paying taxes. Due dates can't be earlier than the 20th of the month following the reporting period.

For more detailed information, see the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board website.

AvaTax + Returns requirements

SST Returns are filed monthly. You must collect and remit in all SST states where your business is registered. As your CSP, Avalara is contractually required to file your SST returns monthly starting on the SST registration date.

If you already registered and file on a quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis, you must contact the SST state about how to remit taxes collected before joining the SST program.

Past transactions are not pulled forward into SST filed remittances. Contact your Account Manager if you need assistance with past transactions.

SST Filing Timeline

1st — 5th
Your tax liabilities are automatically generated for the previous month, summarizing all committed transactions for each state or province and displaying return level liabilities for each jurisdiction.

5th — 10th
Reconciliation and approval: Compare and reconcile your tax liabilities in AvaTax with your accounting application’s sales/sales tax reporting. The returns to be filed this month are locked on the evening of the 10th, after which financial amounts are no longer available for adjustment.

To review your tax liabilities, select Returns -> Approve returns and then click This month’s returns tab. Once reviewed, you can approve returns by clicking the Approve button adjacent to that return.

11th — 14th
The tax liabilities are funded based on the billing option selected on the Power of Attorney (POA) form.

10th — 20th
SST returns processing occurs during these days. Avalara prepares, submits, and forwards the returns and then remits the funds to the applicable states.

All SST returns are due.
