Why am I getting the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" in Quickbooks Online?

Overview

When trying to save or calculate tax in Quickbooks Online, you receive the error: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" 

Environment

Quickbooks Online

Resolution

  • Go to the connector page (https://avataxforqbo.com)
    • Disconnect the account and Logout
  • Login again and complete the Authorization and Integration process.
    • Go to the Edit Configuration page.
    • Re-enter all valid AvaTax Admin Console account credentials and Validate the credentials
      • For valid credentials, a drop down box for company code will appear.
      • Select a valid company
  • Please verify if the Product Item drop-down list is populated and the user is able to select the correct 'Sales Tax' item.
    • Select a valid 'Sales Tax' item having the account type of 'Sales Tax Payable' 
      • This can be found in the Chart of Accounts
    • Click on Save
  • After saving the changes, click the Integrate button.
  • Try calculating tax on a test transaction
    • The customer card will need to be set up as taxable and a full address
    • The items on the transaction will need to be set up in Quickbooks Online as well
