How to fix a CB-231 Error in QuickBooks?


An error is appearing when you try to use Avalara AvaTax in QuickBooks:

You cannot make multiple successive calls to the "open connection" method. Call "CloseConnection" before calling "OpenConnection" again




  • Close QuickBooks (File > Exit)
  • Open Task Manager (via Start Menu or right click on Task Bar > click Task Manager)
    • End every task/process related to QuickBooks, QB, Intuit, and AvaTax
  • Open QuickBooks following a special process:
    • Run as Administrator (Right click QuickBooks > click Run as Administrator)
    • Log in with the username Admin (not a user who is an admin, the user name Admin)
  • Go to File > AvaTax > Configuration > Test Connection
  • These steps ensure any stalled process is ended and the program is started with full user permission and access
