How do I resolve error CB-831 in QuickBooks?


When you attempt to open a company file in QuickBooks a CB-831 error appears.




  • Change QuickBooks to Single User Mode
  • Go to Edit > Preferences:
    • General > uncheck Keep QuickBooks running for quick startup
    • Integrated Applications > Company > update permission for AvaTax
      • if calculation should occur for this company give permission
      • if this company should not use Avalara, remove permission
  • Close QuickBooks
  • Go to the Task Manager
    • End all processes starting with QB (there are usually 2 - 4)
    • End any Avalara or AvaTax process
  • Open QuickBooks logging in as Admin and open the company file which was at issue
    • Go to Edit > Preferences > confirm changes made are still present
    • Go to File > Avatax > Configuration > click Test Connection > click OK
      • ​If permission was removed in previous step, no need to test Avatax configuration
    • Repeat for each company in QuickBooks, ensure correct permission in Integrated Applications for each company file
  • Close QuickBooks > Go to the Task Manager and end all QB, Avalara, or AvaTax processes
  • Open QuickBooks via normal method, logging in with your normal user to confirm issue is resolved and then switch back to Multi User mode
