How do I resolve a QBXML error when installing AvaTax for Quickbooks?

Overview

During installation of AvaTax for QuickBooks or while manually running the Subscribe.exe utility, an error message appears:

"HRESULT = -2147220445 (80040423) The version of QBXML that was requested is not supported or unknown."  (version numbers vary)

or

"Error while Subscribing to Quickbooks Events. 
Function Name = DoSubscribeEvents 
80040423 
The version of QBXML that was requested is not supported or is unknown. 

Please login Using Administrator Privileges and try again."

Resolution

  • The most common reason is inadequate permissions on the Avalara folder (and subfolders) typically found in the Program Files or Program Files (x86), right click the Avalara folder > left click Properties > click Security Advanced 
    • In the window, choose Users > click Change Permissions highlight users > click Edit > click Full Control "Allow" check box > Ok all the way back until you have closed the original.
    • If you get any messages that you do not have permission to do this, you will need to have a network administrator or someone with higher permissions to your workstation complete this.
  • Next use Windows Search to find cmd.exe, then right-click and choose Run as Administrator
    • Type 'cd Program files(x86)/Avalara/AvaTax Adapter/Bin' without the quotes.
    • Type Unsubscribe.exe and press enter. Wait for the message to continue and press enter again.
    • Type unregister_for_callback and press enter. Wait for the message to continue and press enter again.
    • Type unregister_for_Adapter and press enter. Wait for the message to continue and press enter again.
    • Type register_for_Adapter and press enter. Wait for the message to continue and press enter again.
    • Type register_for_callback and press enter. Wait for the message to continue and press enter again.
    • Type Subscribe.exe and press enter.
  • If all is correct there will be no error message.
  • Start QuickBooks (by right clicking the icon on the desktop or on the program in your start menu) and continue with the installation. 

 

Note: If updating folder permission does not allow Subscribe.exe to complete, the newest version of QBFC must be installed, and then installation of the Avalara software can be completed. Please contact Avalara Technical Support support@avalara.com to discuss.
