How do I resolve a CB-101 error?

Overview

You're trying to open QuickBooks Desktop but the error CB-101 "Please reinstall AvaTax Immediately. The application trying to connect to QuickBooks is not supported while multiple instances of QuickBooks are running." appears.

Environment

QuickBooks Desktop

Resolution

  • Install the AvaTax for QuickBooks Desktop connector if you haven't already
  • Close QuickBooks and go to > Task Manager > Processes > end all QB, Quickbooks, Avalara, and AvaTax processes
    • Go to Program Files (or Program Files x86) > Avalara > AvaTax Adapter > Bin > Right click Subscribe.exe Run as administrator
      • Right click QuickBooks icon and click Run as administrator > log in as Admin
      • Click Edit Preferences Integrated Applications Company Preferences 
        • All AvaTax options must have a check next to them and then click Ok
        • Click Properties 
        • Choose Yes, whenever this QuickBooks company file is open. and Save
        • Log out of QuickBooks
    • Log back in normally, and you should see AvaTax open, as well as AvaTax in the File menu
