Why are certain Orthotic tax codes not getting an exemption in Louisiana

You are using certain AvaTax tax codes, and you are not seeing that opthalmic devices (eyeglasses, contact lenses) are exempt.

  • Our Content team is always working to ensure that Avalara system tax codes are compliant with state requirements.

  • The state of LA previously required a 3% rate on opthalmic devices, with LA Publication R-1002A (04/16), Acts 25 and 26 – Taxable Rate of Transactions for Exemptions and Exclusions:

  • In January 2017, the state revised this publication (R-1002 (01-17)) and it now reads:

  • The taxability of certain AvaTax system codes will be updated to an exempt status with the next maintenance release, on March 1, 2017.
  • To exempt those particular tax codes in the interim, you can create a custom tax rule
  • Please reach out to Avalara Support if you have questions about this process.
