How do I connect my BigCommerce account to Avatax?


You want to know how to connect your BigCommerce account to Avatax







  • Use your Avalara credentials to log in at
    • Note: these credentials were sent to you by Avalara with subject line “Your AvaTax log-in information.” If you cannot find this email, use [EmailAddress] as your username, and click the “Forgot password” link.
  • Upon successfully signing in, enter basic company information if you’re prompted to do so.
  • Next, confirm the jurisdictions where you need to collect and remit taxes.
    • Click “Settings” in the upper right hand corner.
    • Click the “Manage where you collect and remit tax” link.
      • Confirm the settings are correct; otherwise, add or remove regions as needed.
      • Don't for get local jurisdictions if you are obligated to collect tax in the following states:  AL, AK, AZ, CO, ID, LA, MS
        • Note:  if collection in local jurisdictions, please reach out to the Dept of Revenue to confirm that you are registered to remit (this is typically a separate registration and return remittance process)
  • Now, let’s gather the information you need to connect your AvaTax account to your BigCommerce Store.
    • Click “Settings” in the upper right hand corner.
      • Note your Account ID and Company Code listed at the top of the page. (We will need these later).
    • Next we will need your software license key. If you already have this value, you can skip ahead to step 5.
      • Scroll to the bottom of the settings page, and click on the link for “Generate a license key.”
      • Copy the generated license key.
  • Now that you have your Account Number, Company Code, and Software license key, let’s head over to your BigCommerce store.
    • Log in to the BigCommerce Control Panel, click “Store Setup,” and then click “Tax.”
    • On the Tax page, click “Sign-In to Avalara.”
      • You will be prompted for your AvaTax account number, software license key and company code. (Leave the ‘sandbox mode’ box unchecked) then click ‘Sign In’.
    • Click the ‘Test Connection’ link – looking for a green check mark.
      • Click Save at the bottom of the page. Confirm that your tax settings have been saved.
  • Congratulations, your AvaTax account is now activated and ready to use!
