Why is the AVATAX tax item not visible in pick list on customer record in NetSuite?


You are creating a new customer record in NetSuite and you are unable to choose the AVATAX tax item from the pick list.  It is not visible to any user role.  You may see an error message "invalid reference XXXX" when trying to save the record, where XXXX is the internal ID of the tax code.

  • Make sure the tax control account that is associated with the tax code, or tax item, is set to active.

    • Search "Tax Control Accounts" in the top search bar within the main NetSuite interface.  
    • Filter this list of accounts by Active / Inactive.  
  • Activate any tax control accounts that are still associated with tax codes that are in use.
