Why does tax change after I click Save in Netsuite?

Overview

You see the amount you expect for tax when working with an invoice in NetSuite, but when you click Save the tax amount changes and you want to know why.

Environment

NetSuite

Resolution

  • Tax calculates automatically every time a change is made to a transaction (invoice, estimate, credit memo, etc.) in Netsuite
  • In Edit mode NetSuite calculates tax with a flat % based on the subtotal of the invoice, no other information is factored in.
  • When you click Save NetSuite  sends a call to the Avalara service, so the results change immediately, because it is only at that point that it is using our service and your Avalara Nexus, item mapping, tax codes, and tax rules are taken into account.  This ensures any update that affects tax on the invoice is reflected in the tax amount.
  • Nexus must be added to the company and subsubsidiary before the sales order is created.
  • You can disable tax calculation for certain document types, but you cannot disable automatic tax calculation on invoices without disabling all tax calculation
    • To disable calculation on certain transactions go to the Avalara configuration:
      • Avalara Setup Configure Avalara > Tax Calculation Settings (tab 3) > check the box next to the option:
        • DISABLE TAX CALCULATION FOR QUOTES

        • DISABLE TAX CALCULATION FOR SALES ORDER

      • Click Next until the final tab, then Finish
