How do I register the AvaTax DLLs for Sage integrations?

Overview

You are receiving an error when testing connection to your AvaTax account and need to register the AvaTax DLLs.

Environment

Sage 50

Sage 100

Sage 300 (Accpac)

Sage 500

Resolution

  • Close Sage Product
  • Go to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Avalara\AvaTax Adapter\Bin
  • Locate "register_for_com" in that folder.
    • Right-Click and Select Edit.
    • Add the word "Pause"
    • Save the change
    • Double click on "register_for_com" to run the function
      • Look for "Type registered successfully"

Note: If you have both a SQL server AND a Terminal server this needs to be done on the SQL server as well.

  • If you do not see the Type registered successfully message, you have to run a command prompt prompt to register the dll:
    • In command prompt, type "cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Avalara\AvaTax Adapter\Bin" " and hit enter.
      • (This is the default path, it can be different depending on the path used for the install of that specific workstation)
    • Type "reg.bat" and hit enter
      • You will see a bunch of messages, but the one we look for says "Type registered successfully".
    • Type "register_for_com.bat" and hit enter.
      • You will see a bunch of messages, but the one we look for says "Type registered successfully".
  • You may need to run the command prompt as administrator - if you get an error saying you do not have administrative privileges, to do this:-
    • Click Start.
    • In the Start Search box, type cmd, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
    • When the User Account Control dialog box appears click Continue
  • If you are still receiving the error, or cannot calculate tax, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Avalara\AvaTax Adapter\Bin
    • Delete the file Avalara.AvaTax.Adapter.tlb
    • Repeat the registration of reg.bat and register_for_com.bat
  • NOTE: It has been reported that being low on disk space within your MAS directory can cause issues for several software pieces including false flag errors regarding the DLL. If you have DLL errors as described above suddenly please double check that you aren't low on disk space.
