Avalara has changed how you can access historical transaction data as part of your subscription to Avalara services. Continue reading to learn how this may impact your business.

What type of historical data is impacted?

This impacts transaction data, which includes:

  • Access to transactions in the Transactions section of your Avalara account
  • Access to reports based on historical transactions
  • Access to transactions via the AvaTax APIs

Does this impact my access to historical tax returns?

No. You can download copies of any returns that Avalara has filed on your behalf, even if you choose not to purchase AvaTax Data Storage or Returns Data Storage.

Does this impact my access to exemption certificate data?

No. You can view, download, and manage any exemption certificates you have on file, even if you choose not to purchase AvaTax Data Storage or Returns Data Storage.

What amount of real-time access to historical transaction data is included in my current subscription?

  • Avalara AvaTax subscriptions include real-time access to transactions with document dates in the current and previous calendar year only.
  • Subscriptions to any of the Avalara Returns filing solutions include access to transactions with document dates in the current and previous four calendar years only.

What type of access is available if I purchase AvaTax Data Storage or Returns Data Storage?

There are two types of extended data storage subscriptions:

  • Real-time: Historical data is available immediately in your Avalara account
  • Archived: You must submit a support case to request historical transaction data. Avalara supplies the data within two weeks of the request

Do I have the opportunity to do a one-time download if I don't purchase AvaTax Data Storage or Returns Data Storage?

Yes, you can download reports of your historical transaction data at any time prior to your subscription renewal date. 

Avalara recommends downloading the Sales Tax Document Line Detail Export report, which includes one row per taxing jurisdiction for each line item. Refer to this guide for instructions. If you use the AvaTax API, you can also use the Reports endpoints to generate the Sales Tax Document Line Export report, which includes one row per line item.

Can I change my mind later if I choose not to purchase extended data storage during my renewal period?

No. If you choose not to purchase AvaTax Data Storage or Returns Data Storage during your renewal period, the historical transaction data will no longer be available.

Avalara recommends doing a one-time download of your historical transaction data if you choose not to purchase AvaTax Data Storage or Returns Data Storage. Refer to this guide for instructions on how to run the Sales Tax Document Line Detail Export report. If you use the AvaTax API, you can also use the Reports endpoints to generate this report.

Can I choose which type of data to keep, such as transactions from certain states?

No. AvaTax Data Storage and Returns Data Storage include access to all of your historical transaction data, for all countries, states, and regions.

What do I need to do?

You don't need to do anything until you reach your subscription renewal period in 2021. If you’d like to purchase access to historical transaction data, make sure to discuss this with your account manager prior to your subscription renewal date
