ACTION NEEDED: New Harmonized System codes effective January 1, 2022

Overview

Effective January 1, 2022, the World Customs Organization (WCO) enforced new Harmonized System (HS) codes for classifying products sold globally. This may require you to take action. See the Resolution section below on what to do.

Avalara stands ready to embed tariff code changes into Avalara Managed Tariff Code Classification as countries adopt them. Any HS codes you previously classified may be impacted.

What do I need to do?

Within your AvaTax account dashboard, a particular product’s classification status may change to Invalid tariff code (see example below). You will need to  re-request a classification for that product.

Why is this happening now?

The WCO released the latest and seventh edition of the HS system. HS is used globally for the uniform classification of goods and to set customs duties and tariffs. Every five years, the WCO reviews and updates HS codes. More information, including reasons for these changes, can be found here: WCO launches new Harmonised Tariff Schedule – HS 2022

When will countries adopt the new codes?

We expect most countries will migrate to the new HS code system within the next six months. Many countries in the EU have already started implementing changes.

Who can I contact with questions?
