Whitelisting Avalara Services in AWS

Overview

In August, Avalara is making changes to how Avalara AvaTax, Avalara Returns and the Avalara Admin Console are hosted. While we will continue to use our own Avalara data center, we’re now implementing Amazon Web Services to provide additional hosting capabilities for these services.

Environment

Avalara AxaTax, Avalara Returns, Avalara Admin Console

Resolution

When is this change taking place?

On or after Monday, August 28, 2017

Will this change my business?

Most customers will not experience any impacts from this change. Only customers who whitelist or hard code the Avalara IP addresses for Avalara AvaTax, Avalara Returns and the Avalara Admin Console will be impacted. Once Avalara implements AWS, customers will no longer be able to hard code an IP address in the URL or by setting a hosts file entry. The new AWS hosting will require the ability to resolve to multiple IP addresses in order to access AvaTax, Returns and the Admin Console.

What do I need to do?

If you plan to continue to whitelist Avalara services, by August 28, you will need to follow the Amazon Web Services process for whitelisting in addition to  existing Avalara IP whitelisting.  The process for whitelisting AWS is listed below:

  1. Create an AWS account if you don’t already have one at https://aws.amazon.com/free/.
  2. Go to http://docs.aws.amazon.com/general/latest/gr/aws-ip-ranges.html and follow the steps to subscribe to AWS IP Address Ranges Notifications.
  3. Follow the steps in the guide to download the most recent ip-ranges.json file and to extract the full list of IP ranges for the following regions:
    1. US-west-2
    2. US-east-1.
  4. Add those IP ranges to your whitelist along with the ones currently in there.

Staying up-to-date with AWS IP addresses

You will also need to stay up-to-date on any IP changes that AWS makes. Avalara will not manage your whitelist.  Once you subscribe to the AWS IP Address Ranges Notifications by following the process detailed above, AWS will notify you of IP range changes. Customers will then need to update their whitelist accordingly.
