What do I need to do for January 1 Arizona statutory changes?

Overview

You may have received an email indicating that there will be some filing changes in Arizona effective January 1st, 2017 which will effect the returns process when filing the January return in February. Specifically, local jurisdictions that previously had their own forms and were filed directly with that jurisdiction will now be filed with the state of Arizona.

Resolution

  • For the December filing period:

    • No changes are needed from you to file this return accurately

    • Avalara is preparing for the changes that become effective January 1st, 2017

  • For the January filing period:

    • Avalara will be making compulsory jurisdictions in Arizona optional jurisdictions.

      • A notice will be posted in the Service Notifications section of the Home tab found in your Avalara AvaTax Admin Console when this change takes place.

      • To make sure that this change does not impact the way you are currently calculating tax, the update will keep the newly optional jurisdictions selected in your Nexus Jurisdiction menu.

      • At that time, you will have the option to deselect these jurisdictions.

      • For questions on whether you should be calculating tax in those jurisdictions, please reach out to the Arizona Department of Revenue directly.

    • If Avalara is filing your Arizona tax returns, changes to your filing calendars will automatically take place.

      • You will see expired filing calendars for the compulsory jurisdictions.

      • They will no longer be required to be setup separately.
