What do the different 'Return Status' entries mean on the liability worksheet?

Overview

When I click the arrow to view more information about the tax liability for a state in the liability worksheet, there is a column that says Return Status. What do the different statuses mean?

Environment

Avalara AvaTax

Resolution

  • No registration information - This indicates that Avalara has not been provided the information needed to file the return on your behalf.
  • Pending Approval - The worksheet has been created, and changes can still be made and picked up. No one has approved the return
  • Approved To File -The customer has entered through the Avalara website that they agree with the numbers for a given return
  • Approved To File On Behalf - The liability worksheet for the state was not approved before the 10th of the month, and the AvaTax system automatically 'approved on behalf'
  • Pending Filing - The return has been approved and payment reconciled. Awaiting transmission by mail or electronically.
  • Pending Filing On Behalf - The liability worksheet for the state was not approved before the 10th of the month, and the AvaTax system automatically 'approved on behalf'. Payment has been reconciled. Awaiting transmission by mail or electronically.
  • Filed - The return has been filed electronically, and confirmation was received
  • Filed On Behalf - The liability worksheet for the state was not approved before the 10th of the month. The AvaTax system automatically 'approved on behalf', and the return has been filed electronically, with confirmation received

Please note that once paper returns are filed, the status will remain as Pending Filing. This is because we do not get a confirmation like we do with electronically filed states.
