Why is my exempt customer getting charged tax?

Overview

Customers with exemption certificates in CertCapture are being charged Sales Tax on invoices.

Environment

Avalara AvaTax 

Avalara CertCapture

Resolution

  • In your accounting system verify that the invoice date falls within the effective range on the certificate
  • In the Admin Console verify there is an exemption certificate on file for same customer code as on the invoice
    • In the Admin Console navigate to the Organization Tab > Exemptions and use the given search parameters to locate whether or not Exemption Exists for given Customer Code
  • In the Admin Console navigate to the Organization Tab > Exemptions and verify that Last Updated was after the time of the invoice calculation
