Exempt customers from sales tax using CertCapture in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

CertCapture is the most comprehensive solution for managing exemption certificates. However, it is an additional product that must be purchased separately. If you have CertCapture, it integrates with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Before you begin

Make sure you also subscribe to CertCapture.

Add a customer to CertCapture from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

You can add one customer record at a time to CertCapture without leaving Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. If you want to add many customer records to CertCapture, import them directly into CertCapture.

Steps

  1. In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, search for a customer card.
  2. In the Customer Card, select Navigate > AvaTax Exemption > Add Customer to Exemption.
  3. Verify or update customer details. 
  4. Select Add Customer.
    On successful addition of a customer to CertCapture, a message displays “Customer created successfully”.

Initiating an exemption certificate request in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

After creating a customer in the CertCapture, initiate an exception certificate request for the customer.

Steps

  1. In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, search for a customer card.
  2. In the Customer Card, select Navigate > AvaTax Exemption > Request Exemption Certificate.
  3. Choose a delivery method to send a certificate request to the customer.
    For example, If 'email' is selected as the delivery method, then an email with a link to submit an exemption certificate will be sent on the email ID that is mentioned in the customer details. 
  4. Select Request Exemption Certificate.
    On the successful request initiation, a message displays “Exemption request initiated successfully”.This doesn't create a certificate directly, but it initiates a request for a certificate.

Retrieve a CertCapture exemption certificate in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Once your exempt customer responds to a CertCapture exemption certificate request, download a copy of the certificate.

Steps

  1. In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, search for a customer card..
  2. In the Customer Card, select Navigate > AvaTax Exemption > Retrieve Certificate(s).
  3. On the AvaTax Certificate Details dialog, to download the certificate, select the certificate and then choose to download the exemption certificate as a .pdf or a .jpeg file.
  4. Select Close.
