Assign customers to the AvaTax tax item in QuickBooks Desktop

When you install AvaTax for QuickBooks Desktop, the installation wizard automatically assigns all customers to the AVATAX tax item. This way, AvaTax calculates sales tax on their invoices, instead of using your company's previous tax solution. If you have customers who aren't assigned to the AVATAX tax item, you can assign them manually.

Steps

To assign one customer

  1. In QuickBooks Desktop, open the customer record you want to assign.
  2. Go to the Sales Tax Settings tab and select AVATAX for Tax Item.

To assign many customers at once

  1. Go to File > AvaTax > Utilities and then select Customer Tax Item Update Utility.
  2. Select the customers you want to assign to AvaTax and then select Assign.
    AvaTax now calculates tax for these customer invoices.
