Update the details of a scheduled return

As the client's company changes over time due to changes in where they collect and pay taxes, you may need to update the scheduled return by editing the filing calendar.

When you need to replace a filing calendar, make sure to expire the existing filing calendar and then add a new filing calendar.

Steps

  1. In Returns for Accountants, select Filing calendars > Filing calendars.
  2. Use the filters to find the filing calendar you want to update.
  3. In the results, find the filing calendar you want to update and select the arrow to see the full details.
  4. Select  > Edit to edit the details.
  5. For the filing request, make changes to any of the following fields that need to be updated:
    • Frequency: Filing period assigned by the state.
      If you need to adjust the filing frequency, you'll be prompted to expire the existing filing calendar and clone it with the updated filing frequency. Enter an end date for the current filing calendar and an effective date of the new filing calendar, then select Submit.
    • Effective Date: Current period start date is automatically entered here or you can enter a future start date.
    • End Date: Expiration date to stop filing the return.
      For example, if the December 2020 return should be the last return filed, enter an end date of 12/31/2020.
    • EIN: The number the client uses to do business within the U.S. Call the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line if there are questions about the client company's Taxpayer ID Number.
    • Filing Method: If you need to adjust the filing method, clone the current filing calendar to add a new filing calendar with the adjusted filing method.
    • Legal entity information
    • Filing calendar question: Varies from state to state.
    • Registration ID: Account number provided by the state.
    • Location Code: Add or remove to pull transactions associated with the location code to the return.
  6. Review the details in the Additional details section, and make changes to any of the fields that need to be updated.
    This section includes information specific to the state or return.
  7. Select Save to when you're finished.
