Edit company locations

This article applies to:Avalara Returns for Accountants

You should regularly monitor your client's company information, which includes reviewing company locations. Make sure to update the information to ensure taxes are correctly calculated and reported on your client's returns.



If a state outlet number changes, Avalara recommends entering an end date to expire a location, and then adding a new location with the updated outlet number.


  1. In Returns for Accountants, go to Filing calendars > Locations.
  2. Use filters to find the company location you want to edit.
  3. In the results, select the arrow to view the company location details.
    The expanded details include tabs for Location DetailQuestionsErrors, and Audit History.
  4. Select ⋮ > Edit to edit the location details.
  5. You can edit any of the following fields:
    • Location code: This is used to link transactions to the location, so it should match the location code provided by the client's business application
      • This location code must also be included with any transactions associated with this location
      • If this is a marketplace location, use the name of the marketplace (such as Amazon, Etsy, eBay, etc.)
    • Description: Enter a description of the location
    • Address type: Indicates if this is a physical location, salesperson, or marketplace location
    • Address category: Select an address category
      For marketplace locations, select one of the following:
      • MarketplaceRemitsTax: Gross is reported, but tax is not paid because the marketplace is responsible for remitting the tax
      • SellerRemitsTax: Gross and tax are reported and paid by the client
    • Effective date: The earliest date you would report tax for this location
    • End date: Enter this only if the location has closed or is scheduled to be closed
    • Default outlet code: Indicates if the location is treated as the client's default location
  6. Select Next.
  7. Enter the full address of the company location, then select Next.
  8. Enter the following information:
    • DBA Name: The doing business as (DBA) name used at the location
    • Outlet name: The name the client uses for the location
    • Any other requested information: Depending on the state, some additional information (such as an account or registration number for the location) may be required
  9. Select Save when you're finished.
