Get started with Item Classification

This article applies to:AvaTax

Item Classification is an Avalara service that assigns Harmonized System (HS) tariff codes to your products. Once Avalara has classified the items you sell, include tariff codes in your AvaTax calculations automatically or export them for use in your own business application.

Add Item Classification to AvaTax

Item Classification may not be included in all AvaTax subscriptions. To add Item Classification to an existing AvaTax plan, contact your Account Manager.

About storage plans

Signing up for Item Classification "with storage" means Avalara stores tariff code assignments as Avalara Item API objects and makes them available in AvaTax under Settings > What You Sell. Stored tariff code assignments are included in tax calculations, whether that's in AvaTax or in the customer checkout experience via a supported integration.

If your Item Classification subscription doesn't include storage, you'll manually retrieve your classifications after Avalara processes them.

Milestones

  1. Add your company information to AvaTax
Start by telling us a little about your company and where you collect tax.
  2. Add countries where you collect customs duties
During classification, we check these nexus settings and then assign a tariff code to products for each country.
  3. Map the items you sell to tariff codes
Send us your product catalog via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or the Item Classification API.
  4. Change Item Classification settings in AvaTax
Adjust how HS codes are assigned to products, included in calculations, and exported for use in other business applications.
  5. Manage tariff code assignments in AvaTax
View and update the tariff codes mapped to items you sell.
