Change item classification settings in AvaTax

After you send the products you sell to Avalara as part of the Item Classification service, they're assigned Harmonized System (HS) tariff codes in AvaTax. Adjust item classification settings to control how often tariff codes are assigned, how they apply to your AvaTax calculations, and where they're exported for use in your business applications.

 

Before you begin

  • Does your Item Classification subscription include storage?
    If so, Avalara stores your tariff code assignments and makes them available in AvaTax. If not, use FTP or the API to manage your classification settings.

Steps

  1. In AvaTax, go to Settings > What You Sell.
  2. Under Item Classification Settings, select View Settings.
  3. Select the input settings that you want to apply to your company:
    • Send product records by country
      There's a charge for each product that must be classified.
    • Send a daily file with my full catalog
      This requires a manual trigger of the classification process.
    • Send a daily file with my full catalog classified by my Nexus country settings
      There's a charge for each product that must be classified.
  4. Select the output settings that you want to apply to your company:
    • Update for automatic use in AvaTax calculations
      Automatically calculate customs duty and import taxes based on Avalara's item classifications.
    • Post the classification to where I'm hosting
      Retrieve your item information to use as you need. When selecting this option, endpoint and API key are required.
    • Return in an output file that I can FTP out
      Retrieve your item information using FTP.
  5. Select Save Settings.
