Run an Exemption Report

This article applies to:Avalara AvaTax Update

Use exemption reports to get more information about your exempt customers, and transactions where you've exempted customers from tax but don't have a current exemption certificate on file.

AvaTax Update begins updating report data every 30 minutes, so you may need to wait to see your most recent transactions in your reports. Go to the Transactions page for up-to-the-minute activity.

Get more information about using reports.

To run an exemption report:

  1. Go to Reports, and click Data export
  2. Select the type of report you want to run in the Report dropdown
  3. Fill out the required fields. Once you've set up your parameters for the report you want to run, click Generate report.

Determine which report you need

Report type Description
Exemption Certificates Shows one row of data for each exemption certificate entry exported.
Exemption Detail by Jurisdiction Shows exempt and non-taxable sales details, capturing a detailed view of the country and region for the selected filters.

The Exempt Type checkboxes offer three different kinds of exemptions to filter by:

  • Entity and Use Based Exemption - Exemptions based on who the purchaser is. For example, purchases made by the federal government or by retailers for resale.
  • Product Based Exemption - Exemptions based on what's being sold. For example, in some states manufacturing equipment is exempt from sales tax.
  • No Nexus Jurisdictions Based Exemptions - AvaTax Update doesn't calculate tax in jurisdictions where you haven't told it that you collect and remit tax. These exemptions may create exposure for your company.
Exemption Exposure Shows your total exempt transactions that don't have current exemption certificates on file. Click links in the report to see this exposure summarized by customer or by transaction.
Exemption Exposure Aging Shows groups of exempt transactions that don't have current exemption certificates on file. Transactions display in four groups - current, greater than 30 days, greater than 60 days, and greater than 90 days.
