California Monthly Filing Frequency


Why can I not add the CA CDTFA 401 A2 Outlet or CA CDTFA 401 A2 as Monthly?




Please confirm by reviewing your change in frequency notice or contacting the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration at 1-800-400-7115 if the monthly filing requirement is truly monthly or if it is monthly prepayments with a quarterly sales tax return.

If the filing frequency requires prepayments, you will need to set up the Inverse Quarterly CA Prepayment filing calendar in conjunction with the CA CDTFA State return on a quarterly basis.

  • If you have one or more registered locations with California, use the CA CDTFA 401 A2 Outlet return.
  • If you have no registered locations use the CA CDTFA 401 A2.

If you confirm that the State is expecting an actual sales tax return on a monthly basis, Avalara is currently unable to support this filing frequency.

Monthly filers will need to file returns in house or reach out to the State to request a supported filing frequency if they would like Avalara to file on their behalf: Annual, Quarterly, or Quarterly with Monthly Prepayments. They can be reached via the CDTFA Website or 1-800-400-7115
