Edit a customizations Profile

If you use customization profiles in AvaTax for Communications to calculate tax for multiple companies or business units that require separate tax calculation settings, it's important to keep your settings up-to-date to match your business requirements.  Learn how to update the settings and customizations assigned to a profile. Changes you make to a profile affect new tax calculations, but don't change the tax amounts on any existing transactions.

Avalara recommends testing all customizations in your sandbox account before you add them to your production account. After you add customizations to your production account, run test transactions or use the tax determination calculator to make sure you receive the expected results before you complete any bill runs.

Before you begin

Each profile is assigned a unique Profile Number that you'll use to apply the settings to a transaction. Review the AvaTax for Communications REST API developer documentation to learn how to use the unique Profile Number.

Steps

  1. In the Communications Customer Portal, select Settings.
    The Settings page opens.
  2. Next to Customizations, select Manage.
    The Customizations page opens.
  3. On the Profiles tab, find the profile you want to edit and then select more ( ... ).
  4. Select Edit.
    The Edit Profile page opens.
  5. Optional: Edit the Profile Name.
  6. Choose your customization components.
    These are optional customizations you can assign to a profile.
    • Exclusion Group This is a list of regions where your business is not responsible for collecting or remitting taxes and fees.
      Select this option to assign an exclusion group to the profile.
    • Bundle GroupThis is a groups of bundled items: products or services that you sell as a single bundled line item. 
      Select this option to assign a bundle group to the profile.
    • Advanced Customizations:
      • Custom tax settings: This allows you to customize the calculation results for taxes that are based on other tax amounts, self-taxing taxes, and to select if 
      • Safe harbor overrides: This allows you to override the safe harbor percentages provided by the FCC for calculation of the Federal Universal Service Fund
  7. Select Save Profile to save your changes.

The new settings are applied to new tax calculations, but don't change the tax amounts on any existing transactions.
