Create a Profile to customize your tax calculation settings

This article applies to:AvaTax for Communications

If you use AvaTax for Communications to calculate tax for multiple companies or business units that require separate tax calculation settings, consider creating separate profiles for each business unit.  A profile is a collection of settings you can use to customize tax calculation for your business.

This is currently a beta feature available only to some customers using the REST API. See this guide for more information.

Before you begin

Each profile is assigned a unique Profile Number that you'll use to apply the settings to a transaction. Review the AvaTax for Communications REST API developer documentation to learn how to use the unique Profile Number.

Avalara recommends testing all customizations in your sandbox account before applying the customizations to your production account. Once you've added the customizations to your production account, use the tax determination calculator to test before completing any bill runs.
  1. In the Communications Customer Portal, select Settings.
    The Settings page opens.
  2. Next to Customizations, select Manage.
    The Customizations page opens.
  3. On the Profiles tab, select Add Profile.
    The New Profile page opens.
  4. Enter a Profile Name.
  5. Enter a Profile Number.
You'll use this number to apply the profile to a transaction. Refer to the AvaTax for Communications REST API developer documentation to learn how to use the unique Profile Number with transactions.
  6. Choose your customization components.
These are optional customizations you can assign to a profile.
    • Exclusion Group This is a list of regions where your business is not responsible for collecting or remitting taxes and fees.
Select this option to assign an exclusion group to the profile.
    • Bundle GroupThis is a groups of bundled items: products or services that you sell as a single bundled line item.
Select this option to assign a bundle group to the profile.
    • Advanced Customizations:
      • Custom tax settings: This allows you to customize the calculation results for taxes that are based on other tax amounts, and to select if non-billable taxes are returned in the tax calculation details you receive from AvaTax for Communications.
      • Safe harbor overrides: This allows you to override the safe harbor percentages provided by the FCC for calculation of the Federal Universal Service Fund.
  7. Select Save Profile to save your changes.

Profiles can also be edited or deleted, but if a profile has been applied to transactions you should keep it on file so that you have a record of the settings used to calculate tax.
