After a tax period's returns have been filed with the state, it is highly recommended that you mark the return as filed in the data grid.  Filing a return prevents new records from being added inadvertently,  using import or manual entry.  Returns marked as filed can also be filtered from the data grid view of current open sessions.

Operations that will require you to mark a tax return as filed:

  • Copy ending inventories to the beginning inventories of the next period.
  • Create an amended return.

Only a session that has not been locked by the user can be marked as filed.  Click here to learn about locking a session.

File a tax return

  1. Set the view dropdown to Open.
  2. Locate the session to file.  To narrow down your selections, use the Filter.
  3. Look at the column Return Status.
  4. If you don’t see the Return Status, click Columns and checkmark it to add it to the view.
  5. If the return status is Passed go to step 7.
  6. If the return status column is blank then the original tax return has not been run yet.  Complete it before you file the return.
  7. Look at the column Return Generation Needed.
  8. If the status is No go to step 12.
  9. If the status is Yes click icon to refresh the return generation.
  10. If there is no refresh icon, then the original return has not been run yet.
  11. Click the return row.
  12. Choose File Tax Return.
  13. Confirm the Filed Date.
  14. Click Mark As Filed.
  15. To view the filed return, change the view dropdown from Open to All.
  16. The Open and All views each have their own column view checklist.
  17. If you don't see the Filed Date, add that column to the view for the All display.

Unfile a tax return

If you are requested by the jurisdiction to produce an edited original return, the return may be unfiled and filed again as many times as necessary.

  1. Click the return row.
  2. Choose Unfile Tax Return.
    • An original filing will not have the option to unfile if there is an amended sequence added to that session.
      • The original filing is sequence 0, and amendments are sequence 1 or higher.
    • If the amended sequence was created in error, click that row, click Delete Tax Session and then unfile sequence 0.  Deleting a tax session also deletes any records in that selected sequence.
  3. Mark the return as filed again when you are finished.
