What are tax notices?
A tax notice is a communication sent by a tax authority. Tax notices may inform you of an error, penalty or adjustment to a tax return. Not all tax notices require you to take action or make a payment, some are sent simply to inform you of any changes.
Where do I view my tax notices?
If you have been sent a tax notice we will let you know via email. You will need to login to VAT Returns, and once logged in head to the Tax Notices page. The most recent tax notice will be shown at the top of the page. You can click on the blue arrow to download a copy of the tax notice.
Why have I been sent a tax notice?
This will depend on the type of tax notice, once you have downloaded a copy of the tax notice you can open it to see which tax authority the notice is from, and what it relates to. A tax notice may be sent as a penalty for late payment or filing, they are also commonly sent to inform you of any changes or adjustments. Please note that you are ultimately responsible for opening and dealing with any tax notices, Avalara will upload tax notices to VAT Returns and inform you when they are sent, however, we will not send any reminders after the notice is sent.
What do I need to do when I receive a tax notice?
For many notices no action is required, simply save a copy of the tax notice for your records. If the tax notice requires you to take action, such as making a payment or adjusting a return the tax notice document will inform you of what action is required.
Can I dispute a tax notice?
If you have been sent a tax notice that you disagree with you can contact the Avalara returns team from inside the VAT Returns application, from the returns page follow the buttons to Contact Our Returns Team.
Are there costs associated with disputing tax notices?
Contacting our team about a tax notice is free, however, for some notices such as audit requests, there may be an additional charge. If you need help with any tax notices you can contact our team who will inform you if any fees are required.
