Install and Configure AvaTax Local

Overview

This guide explains in detail how to install and configure AvaTax Local. To learn more, see how to use AvaTax Local.

Install AvaTax Local

  1. Install Microsoft SQL Express 2005 or later on your computer.
  2. Download the latest installation file for AvaTax Local
  3. From the installation zip file, unzip AvaTaxLocalInstaller_14.3.0.0.zip and extract the Setup.exe file.
  4. Double-click Setup.exe, and in the AvaTaxLocal - InstallShield Wizard dialog box, click Install and if necessary, click Next.
  5. Click Finish.

Before you configure AvaTax Local

  1. Post all of your transactions to the Avalara AvaTax online service.
  2. Back up your AvaTax SQL Server database.

Configure AvaTax Local

  1. From the Start menu, click the Avalara folder, click the AvaTax Local folder, and then click DBCreation Utility.
  2. In the AvaTax Local Login dialog box, accept the default user name and password and click Log In.
  3. In the Database Creation Utility dialog box, at the bottom, click Create AvaTax Local Database.

  4. In the "Database creation successfully completed" message, click OK.
  5. In the Database Creation Utility dialog box, click the close box at the upper right to close the dialog box.
  6. From the Start menu, click the Avalara folder, click the AvaTax Local folder, and then click AvaTaxLocal UI.
  7. In the AvaTax Local Login dialog box, accept the default user name and password and then click Log In.
  8. In the AvaTax Local dialog box, in the AvaTax Account tab, at the right, click Edit and then enter the following credentials for your AvaTax account:
    • URL
    • Account ID
    • License Key
    • User ID
    • Password
    • Company Code
    • Location Code
  9. Click Test Connection with AvaTax, and when you see "The current settings have been verified," at the bottom, click Save the Configuration.

  10. Click the Data Source tab, and at the bottom, click Test Connection with AvaTax.
  11. When you see a message that says "Test connection successful," click Save the Configuration.
  12. Click the Settings tab, and accept all the default settings. To change your AvaTax Local password, follow these steps:
    1. At the right, click Edit.
    2. In the AvaTax Local User Name text box, type a new user name, and AvaTax Local password text box, type a new password.
    3. At the bottom, click Save the Configuration.

Integrate AvaTax Local with your software

To integrate AvaTax Local with your accounting, enterprise resource planning, electronic commerce, mobile commerce, or point-of-sale software, follow these steps, which use Microsoft Dynamics AX as an example:

  1. Start Microsoft Dynamics AX.
  2. On the left, click Retail, and on the right, under AvaTaxLocal URL, type the following:
  3. At the right, click Verify Credentials.

Set AvaTax Local parameters

  1. Click the Utilities tab, and then click the Services tab.

  2. Click Start service, and when you see a message that says, "Status: AvaTax Local Service is successfully running on your system," click Test Service.
  3. At the bottom left, click Clean, and then click Get Updates Now.
  4. At the bottom, click All, and then click Get Updates Now.
  5. At the right, click Post Transactions.
  6. Click the Diagnostics tab, and then click any of the following: 
    • Test AvaTax Local Service to verify that AvaTax Local is running.
    • Test AvaTax Service to verify that your AvaTax user login credentials are correct.
    • Get Pending Transactions to find out the number of transaction that are pending to post.
    • View AvaTax Local Log to see the events and error log.

  7. Click the Scheduler tab, and then do any of the following:
    • To schedule updates from AvaTax to AvaTax Local:
      1. At the right, click Edit Updates Schedule, and then click On.
      2. At the left, under Schedule Updates from AvaTax, set the day and time when you want to receive updates, and then at the right, click Save Updates Schedule. 
      3. At the right, click Edit Posting Schedule, and then click On.
      4. At the left, under Schedule Posting of Transactions to AvaTax, set the day and time when you want to post transactions, and then at the right, click Save Posting Schedule.
    • To check your log of previous updates and transaction, at the bottom, click View Scheduler Log.
    • To restore your scheduler settings to the default settings, at the bottom, click Restore Defaults.
