Now that you've activated your AvaTax account and set up your tax profile, it's time to install and configure your integration. At the end of this process, you'll send a test transaction to confirm that AvaTax is calculating tax the way you expect. After running a successful test, you'll be able to start using AvaTax!

1. Install

After you download the Avalara AvaTax connector for Microsoft Dynamics AX Retail, you need to install AvaTax setup for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, deploy model files, run the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 install wizard, and install and configure AvaTax Local.

Download your integration

To connect your accounting software to AvaTax, download your integration software.

  1. In the Admin Console, on the Home tab, click Get Started.
  2. In the Download and Install Your Integration Software section, click Download Software
  3. In the Download Your AvaTax Connector Software window, click the arrow next to the name of your software, and then download the latest version of your integration. If the file isn't available for download, clear your browser's cache, and log back into the Admin Console.

  1. Log in to Microsoft Dynamics AX Retail and click AvaTax.
  2. In the Setup section, click Configuration Setting.
  3. In Configuration Settings, click Retail.
  4. On the Setup options for AvaTax Process section, select the following:
    1. Under General Options, the Disable Tax Calculation option disables tax calculation service at the Retail POS. The Disable Address Validation disables the AvaTax address validation service at the Retail POS.
    2. In the Tax Area Code section, the Sales Tax Group should be AVATAX (recommended).
    3. Click the Tax Mapping Code checkbox in the Item Tax Code section if you want to map AvaTax System Tax Codes to items in the Retail POS. Selecting the checkbox enables the Tax Code Mapping Utility within the AvaTax menu. The steps for mapping items can be found in the AvaTax for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 user guide.
  5. AvaTaxLocal URL:
    1. HQ URL: Format: https://localhost:8080/AvaTaxLocal/. This can point either to the Admin Console server: https:\\ or to the AvaTax Local service HQ server URL. If the HQ URL points to AvaTax, transactions and tax rate updates are automatically sent to the Admin Console. If the AvaTax Local URL points to the AvaTax Local service rather than to the {{{AAC}}, you have to push transactions and rate updates to {{AAT}} by clicking on Get updates and Send transactions.
    2. Store URL: Format: https://localhost:8080/AvaTaxLocal/. This should always point to the AvaTax Local service URL https:\\store_IP_address:8080\AvataxLocal. Every server in the network should have the AvaTax Local service installed in order to distribute specific store information to all the AvaTax Local stores.

    1. AVA_CNFG (AvaTax Configuration)
    2. AVA_MISMAP (AvaTax Misc Charge Code Mapping)
    3. AVA_TXCMAP (AvaTax Tax Code Mapping)
  7. Under Tax Rate Data Update, click Get Updates to launch the AvaTaxLocalGetUpdates.bat file. You can do this whenever you want to update the tax and rate data for the AvaTax Local HQ database.
  8. Click Send Transactions to launch the AvaTaxLocalPostTransactions.bat file, which sends all transactions from the AvaTax Local HQ database. This is needed and used only if the HQ URL points to AvaTax Local rather than to the AvaTax service URL.

Customize POS

To customize POS, follow these steps:

  1. Run SQL scripts to create AvaTax tables:
    1. Open SQL Management Studio on the POS Store Server and run the three database scripts in the AvaTax Setup AX POS side database script folder against the store database.
