Install and Configure Avalara AvaTax for Salesforce CPQ+

This article applies to:Avalara AvaTax for Salesforce CPQ+

After you activate AvaTax Update and set up your company profile, install and configure AvaTax Update for your accounting software. During configuration, customize your setup to fit your unique business needs for things like:

  • Tax calculation settings for various tax types
  • Exemption settings if you have exempt customers
  • Product taxability settings

Alter these settings when your business needs change.

Install AvaTax Update for Salesforce CPQ+

To connect Salesforce CPQ+ to AvaTax Update:

  1. In AvaTax Update, go to Settings > Manage Account. Avalara Account opens in a new tab.
  2. In Avalara Account, go to Integrations > Extractors & Connectors, and then click the link for the appropriate Avalara AvaTax Salesforce Mapper version (sandbox or production).
  3. On the Package Install page, select Install for All Users, and then click Install.
  4. To complete the installation, click Done.
  5. Ensure the user has full access permissions for Avalara custom objects (UDLs and UserMessages).
  6. Repeat steps 1-4 to install the appropriate version (sandbox or production) of AvaTax Update for Salesforce CPQ+.
  7. On the Installed Packages page, next to the AvaTax for Salesforce CPQ+ package, click Configure to continue to configuration.

Configure AvaTax Update for Salesforce CPQ+

To configure the AvaTax Update integration:

  1. If you're not continuing to configuration immediately after installation:
    1. Click Setup, search for "installed packages," and then click the link to the Installed Packages page that is returned as a search result.
    2. On the Installed Packages page, next to the AvaTax for Salesforce CPQ+ package, click Configure.
  2. On the Account Credentials tab, fill in the following, and then click Test Connection:
    Field  Description
    • Account Number
    • License Key
    Use the information provided in an email from Avalara (sent to the email account you used to activate your account). It must match what's saved in AvaTax Update.
    Sandbox Turn on if you're using a sandbox to set up and test your integration with AvaTax Update.
  3. Select the company code you entered when you activated your AvaTax Update account, and then click Save.
  4. On the Corporate Address tab, enter the address to use as the origin address for calculating tax on your transactions, and then click Validate Address.
  5. On the Advanced Settings tab, modify the following account details, and then click Save:
    Field  Description
    Save Transactions To AvaTax Enable to post order transactions to AvaTax Update.
    Enable Tax Calculation Enable to turn on sales tax calculations.
    Enable Address Validation If you disable address validation, AvaTax Update uses the customer's ship-to address as entered to calculate the correct sales tax. Sales tax might be calculated incorrectly if this option is disabled.
    Disable AvaTax Triggers Enable to pause communication between Salesforce CPQ+ and AvaTax Update.
  6. To calculate sales tax for companies with subsidiaries in multiple companies, map the subsidiaries to companies in Salesforce:
    1. Create a custom object, and, when providing the custom object information, enter Subsidiary in the Label field. For help creating a custom object in Salesforce CPQ+, consult the Salesforce user guide.
    2. Create a custom lookup field under Accounts that references the Subsidiary object you just created. For help creating a custom lookup field in Salesforce CPQ+, consult the Salesforce user guide.
    3. Return to configuration and, on the MultiCompany Settings tab, fill in the following:
      Field Action
      Object Name for Subsidiary Enter the object name of the subsidiary that you created in Salesforce CPQ+
      Subsidiary Field Name on Account Enter the subsidiary field name on the account that you created in Salesforce CPQ+
    4. Click Display Mapping to see what subsidiaries you've mapped to companies in AvaTax Update.

Customize page layout

After you install AvaTax Update, additional custom fields and buttons are available to add to Salesforce CPQ+ page types.

To add fields or buttons to a page type:

  1. Open a page of the type you want to add to, click Edit Layout, click Fields or Buttons, and then drag the desired field or button to the detail section of the page (e.g. to the Account Detail section if you're adding to the accounts page type). The following are available after you install AvaTax Update:

  2. To add line details on pages where they're available, click the wrench icon on the heading of the indicated section, select the indicated fields from the Available Fields list, and then click Add:

Configure automatic address validation for quotes 

Use workflow rules and apex triggers to enable automatic address validation on quotes. Refer to Salesforce Sales Cloud documentation for specific steps for creating workflow rules and apex triggers.

To trigger automatic address validation:

  • Create workflow rules or process builders to select the Validate Address Before Tax Calculation checkbox.

Configure automatic tax calculation for quotes

Use workflow rules or apex triggers to automate tax calculation on quotes. Refer to Salesforce Sales Cloud documentation for specific steps for creating workflow rules and apex triggers.

To trigger tax calculation automatically on quotes, do one of the following:

  • Create a workflow rule to select the Calculate Tax checkbox on a quote.
  • Write a trigger to call the GetTax method (AVA_SFCPQ.QuoteUtils.AsyncQuoteGetTax) on a quote.
